Centralia School Board Director Kayla Mounts has resigned from her position after serving for a year, the Centralia School District announced in a news release on Friday.
Mounts was sworn in on July 30, 2025. She replaced Maritza Bravo, who resigned June 18, 2025. Bravo had served as a board member since 2022.
According to the news release, Mounts shared with the district a “desire to step back from her responsibilities as a school board director” after becoming a grandmother.
“I have enjoyed seeing things from this side of the table, and a fresh perspective,” Mounts said in the release. “If it weren’t for family needs, I would not be stepping down from the school board. It has been an honor to serve Centralia.”
According to the release, Mounts joined the board with nearly 15 years of experience in public education, which included roles as a public school employee and adjunct professor.
Mounts previously taught as an elementary school teacher in Rainier.
“My husband and I recently settled into our home on Seward Avenue, and we are deeply invested in the Centralia community,” Mounts said in a biography on the district’s website. “We stay actively engaged in many ways — through ministry, our work as public school employees, my role as an adjunct professor teaching elementary math methods, and as parents of children attending Centralia schools.”
The remaining board members are now accepting letters of interest and resumes for the vacant position. According to the release, applicants must be registered voters and residents of the Centralia School District.
The open application period runs from Aug. 14 until 4:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 28. Interviews will take place at 5 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 16.
