Becca Jones, a sophomore at Centralia High School, recently traveled to Olympia to serve as a page in the Washington state House of Representatives.
House Republican Caucus Chair Rep. Peter Abbarno, R-Centralia, sponsored her visit during the week of April 14-18.
"Becca was a fantastic addition to the House for the week," Abbarno said. "She brought energy, thoughtfulness and a genuine interest in how government works. It was a pleasure to see her engage so fully in the page experience and represent Centralia with pride."
During her time at the Capitol, Becca took part in many page responsibilities, including delivering messages and documents to legislators, navigating the Capitol campus and assisting with duties on the House floor. She also attended page school every day to learn more about the legislative process. As part of her requirements, she completed a bill project focused on school safety issues.
"Choosing to research and present on school safety speaks volumes about Becca's awareness and maturity," Abbarno added. "It's clear she's thinking not only about her own future, but also about the well-being of her peers. I'm incredibly proud of her work."
Becca enjoys English class, listens to pop music and participates in basketball, track and cross country. After graduation, she hopes to attend Brigham Young University and continue making a positive impact in her community.
Each year, students from across Washington apply to participate in the legislative page program. Pages earn $65 per day and receive valuable civics education through hands-on experiences, including attendance in page school and working alongside House members and staff.
"The page program gives young leaders like Becca a front-row seat to the lawmaking process," Abbarno said. "She made the most of this opportunity, and I'm excited to see all the ways she will continue to lead and serve in the years to come."
