TUMWATER — Weather and darkness have slowed the progress of the 2A EvCo Sub-District Tennis Tournament this week, but Centralia’s Jacoby and Zander Corwin won the doubles crown with an impressive performance at Tumwater High School on Thursday.
The doubles final, which was originally scheduled for Tuesday, was pushed to Thursday due to rain the past two days, but the delay didn’t seem to bother the Corwin’s one bit.
They topped Tumwater’s Kody Lambert and Kaleb Peterson in straight set, 6-4, 6-2 to earn the Sub-District crown.
That wasn’t the only doubles match of the day at THS, as a couple of consolation games also took place, including a three-set thriller.
Tumwater’s Max Bunn and Luke Houk topped Centralia’s Kadin Yeung and Jordan Yeung 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 7-5 to advance to the third-place game. They’ll take on W.F. West’s Bryce Kuykendall and Braden Newman, who topped their teammates Andre Tseng and Sawyer Cothern 6-0, 6-1.
The winner of the third-place match will earn a spot in the district tournament next Thursday and Friday, Oct. 24 and 25 in Vancouver, while the loser will have to play in a pigtail match to get into the double-elimination portion of the tournament.
The Yeung brothers and the Tseng/Cothern duo will play for fifth, with the winner taking an alternate spot at districts. Those matches are scheduled to take place Friday at Tumwater.
There wasn’t as much clarity in the singles final at Black Hills, as Tumwater’s Bodie Jackson and W.F. West’s Javyn Han split two sets before the match was called due to darkness.
They’ll play their third set on Monday to determine the sub-district champion.
In the consolation games, W.F. West’s Will Cummings topped Tumwater’s Kieran Cox 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 to earn a spot in the third-place match, and Centralia’s Jonah Lowe also punched his ticket to the third-place match by topping Kycen Donahue, his teammate, 6-3, 6-3.
Cummings and Lowe will play for third, and like the doubles bracket, the winner will advance while the loser will be forced to play a pigtail game. Cox and Donahue will play for fifth and the alternate spot. Those matchups are scheduled for Friday at Black Hills.
