In one of the largest district championships throughout the state, three area girls wrestlers ended up on top of the podium in the two-day Class 1B/2B/1A District 4 meet.
Mossyrock’s Bailey Gross (115-pounds), Napavine’s Maya Kunkel (170) and Adna’s Olivia Chapman (190) all were on top of the podium at Montesano High School. The Pirates were the best area team, placing sixth with 144 points. Rainier was eighth with 124.5 points while Napavine (11th) and Mossyrock (13th) both eclipsed triple digits.
Those first three plus Winlock tied for the most area qualifiers for next week’s Mat Classic with five.
Chapman heads into the Tacoma Dome with a 31-12 record and picked up three first period pins to win her weight class. Teammates Kassidy Davis (100) and Chloe Gevin (110) got to the finals, but lost by a 12-8 decision and a tech fall, respectively. Two other Adna wrestlers finished inside the top-eight.
Gross is now 26-1 and has yet to lose to a 1B/2B/1A competitor. She also registered three pins in her tournament. The Vikings saw Charley Berteaux (145) place second and two others clinch spots in Pierce County.
Kunkel had two of her three pins in under 60 seconds to pace the Tigers with five total qualifiers. For the Mountaineers, their highest finisher was 235-pounder Ryleigh Cruse, placing second to return to Mat Classic. Defending state champ Chloe Willis (190) finished third, as did Dakota Gardner at 105. Two Rainier girls also secured spots in the state tournament.
Tenino’s Maleah Chacon (120) took second in her weight class with three bonus point victories. Winlock’s Hailey Goodrich (125) and Rochester’s Izzabella Crawford (135) both secured third place performances. The Beavers will have four total qualifiers and the Warriors have three girls next week.
Pe Ell’s trio of Sophia Milanowski (235), Peyton Pilz (235) and Julie West (140) all qualified while Onalaska’s Ferra Gust (135) and Toledo’s Addison Parker (145) placed in the top-five to nab spots at state.
