Members of the Chehalis community gathered at Chehalis City Hall Monday afternoon to celebrate Sgt. Bruce Thompson, who retired after 36 years in law enforcement.

Thompson spent the final 20 years of his career in Chehalis, with his last year as a sergeant. Prior to that, he served 16 years working with the City of Toledo, including six years as the police chief. His introduction to law enforcement came in 1987 as a reserve police officer in Napavine, where he grew up.

Thompson, 65, worked in the family trade of logging before working in law enforcement, but he lost his arm in 1985. After originally being refused entry into the police academy due to his injury, he later was granted entry and graduated.

Thompson told The Chronicle that he chose to retire to spend more time with his family, including multiple planned camping trips. He appreciated the kind comments made by his coworkers during Monday’s ceremony.

“It was very nice. Some very nice comments were made, and I appreciate them all,” Thompson said. “The career has been satisfying. Over the years, I’ve appreciated the support of the community.”
