It wasn’t just the running of Liam Pelletier and Logan Mays that pushed the Huskies into the win column once again, beating the Warriors 58-18 on Friday night in a Class 1B SeaTac Southern contest.
They also connected on passes to each other, with Mays hitting Liam Pelletier for a 36-yard touchdown to cap a 26-point second quarter. Pelletier returned the favor with a 29-yard completion to Mays.
Both hit triple digits on the ground – Pelletier recorded 240 yards and Mays finished with 127 – and six total scores. Mays took the opening kickoff 82 yards to the crib. Payton Shields also found the end zone twice on short yardage runs.
“This 8-man game takes a different kind of (staying in) shape; there are a lot of guys playing both ways,” Morton head coach Lee Metcalf said. “We’re learning every week.”
The Huskies (2-0) shut down the Warriors in the second half and limited the total yards to under 160. Still, they lost three fumbles and had a couple penalties that hurt them.
“We had our moments,” Metcalf said of the defense. “After the first quarter we were pretty sound. You start to figure things out.”
Morton will go back on the road next week and face Ocosta in another league game.
Trio of 1B area teams fall in Week 2
Oakville, White Pass and Winlock all suffered blowout losses on Friday night in 1B SeaTac Southern league action.
The Acorns dropped a 56-6 decision to returning state semifinalist Wahkiakum in their home opener. Meanwhile for the Panthers, their first 8-man game in over a decade featured a 50-8 setback at the hands of North Beach. And the Cardinals were silenced for the second time in as many weeks, falling to Naselle 64-0.
All three will be home for Week 3. Oakville takes on North Beach, White Pass welcomes Naselle and Winlock faces Quilcene in a non-league matchup.
