Ophileah and Zoie Cortes led the Twin City Wrestling Club at the Washington State Wrestling Association Freestyle and Greco Championships in Spokane over the weekend, as they both won state titles.
Ophileah Cortes won the Freestyle title in the Girls K-2 98-106 pound division, defeating fellow Mat Cat Layla Simonds in the final, while Zoie Cortes won the Greco title in the 235-pound high school division as a sixth grader.
Zoie Cortes opted to move up because there were no competitors at the middle school level. She won all three of her matches by pinning her opponent, which helped her tally a team-high 31 points.
Ophileah Cortes finished with 26 points, Jace Hanson added 25, and both Hunter Rice and Kaiden Coates finished with 23. Bowen Driscoll notched 20, Aiden Bensching logged 18, Simonds and Natasha Hicks both tallied 11, and Chance Swartz chipped in seven.
In addition to the two state champions, the Mat Cats had three runner-ups, four third-place finishers, four fourth-place finishers, a sixth-place finisher, and two eighth-placers.
Among the wrestlers who placed in both styles were Driscoll (third in Greco and sixth in Freestyle), Ophileah Cortes (first in Freestyle and second in Greco), Rice (fourth in Greco and eighth in Freestyle), Coates (second in Freestyle and third in Greco), and Zoie Cortes (first in Greco and third in Freestyle).
