Thirteen Oregon National Guard members were injured in a Saturday crash in Clatsop County that also killed one man.

Police responded to a “mass casualty” incident at about 8:56 p.m. on U.S. 30 near milepost 85. Investigators determined that 65-year-old Markham Marshall Stangland from Warrenton was driving west when he crossed the center line for unknown reasons, Oregon State Police said.

Stangland sideswiped a black pickup truck driven by 25-year-old Jaden Vinay Govindan of Aloha, then collided with a transit van carrying the Guard members. Another pickup truck driven by 29-year-old Gregory Louis Wavra of Longview couldn’t stop in time and hit both Stangland and the transit van.

Stangland died at the scene, police said.

Wavra and Govindan both suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital.

The driver of the transit van, 21-year-old Haiden Cunningham of Milwaukie, suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital.

Lt. Col. Stephen Bomar of the Oregon military said the incident injured 13 Oregon Guardsmen, three of whom were still hospitalized Monday.

“This was a horrible accident resulting in an individual’s death and multiple injuries to all involved to include 13 Oregon National Guard members,” he said in an email.
