A 25-person crew is working to extinguish a half-acre fire burning in Mount Rainier National Park, the National Park Service announced Sunday.
The blaze, now known as the Twin Firs Fire, was started by a lightning strike Friday morning. The fire is burning in old growth forest about 1,200 feet north of the park's Nisqually Road between Kautz Creek and the Twin Firs Trail.
Visitors to the park are asked not to stop between the creek and the Twins Firs trailhead, which is now closed, according to the Park Service.
The fire does not present a danger to Longmire or any other park infrastructure at this time. However, the fire is being put out due to its proximity to Longmire and the large number of other fires burning in the area, all of which were started by lightning strikes Friday morning, Park Service officials say.
The park continues to be under a fire ban in all campgrounds due to warm, dry conditions and high fire danger, the Park Service says.
