Cushman, Teeter set new career-highs in Bearcats win over Wolves

Ignited by 26 points from Joy Cushman and 27 points by the bench, the W.F. West High School girls basketball team inched closer to another outright Evergreen Conference title with an 86-52 verdict over Black Hills on Tuesday night in Tumwater.

A win over Aberdeen plus a Tumwater loss on Friday would seal the Bearcats being the EvCo’s No. 1 seed for the district tournament once again. Against the Wolves, they turned at one point a 21-20 lead into a 20-point cushion when both sides walked into the locker room.

Cushman’s night, which included half of her points in the second quarter, plus Izzy Teeter adding 14 were career-highs for the guard duo.

“Izzy had some nice cuts around the rim; Dilyn and Kaitlyn did a good job kicking it out to Joy,” W.F. West head coach Kyle Karnofski said. “We had some really good effort. This group is fun.”

Dilyn Boeck added 23 points for the Bearcats (14-4, 7-0 EvCo) and Mallory Gaskill chipped in eight. They scored north of 80 points for the third time this season.

For Black Hills (10-8, 3-4), it was down by four after a quarter, but never scored more than 15 points in the final three frames. Natalie Buchanan led the scoring department with 20 points while Haley McMahon added 14 and Tyler Venable contributed 10.

The Wolves take on rival Tumwater on Friday night at home.
