With 75,202 votes in, incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Dan Newhouse appeared likely headed to November’s general election on Tuesday night in the race for Washington’s 4th Congressional District.
The district extends through Central Washington from the state’s northern border with Canada to Oregon. Newhouse led the field at 20,542 votes, 27.32%, with Newhouse’s sole Democratic challenger Doug White in second at 19,534 votes, for 25.98%.
Former Republic police chief and 2020 Republican candidate for governor Loren Culp trailed Newhouse and White in third with 16,352 votes, for a total of 21.74% of the votes counted. Five other Republican candidates split the remainder of the vote with Jerrod Sessler receiving the highest number of votes at 8,214.
Newhouse was one of 10 U.S. House Republicans, including fellow Washington U.S. Reps. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, and Liz Cheney, R-Wyoming, who voted to impeach former president Donald Trump following the riots at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Herrera Beutler also appeared ready to move to the general election as initial results in the 3rd Congressional District showed she was in second place. In that race, Joe Kent, who, like Culp, was endorsed by former president Donald Trump, was in third Tuesday.
