Daytime travelers who use northbound Interstate 5 in Grand Mound and Tumwater should plan for lane and ramp closures this week as Washington state Department of Transportation (WSDOT) crews repair the road surface.
The work is weather-dependent and could be rescheduled each day, WSDOT said in a news release on Monday.
The repair schedule as of Monday, Oct. 2, is listed below:
• The right lane of northbound I-5 approaching Grand Mound (Exit 88) and the northbound I-5 exit to U.S. Highway 12 and Old Highway 99 Southwest will be closed from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 2.
• The right lane of northbound I-5 approaching Grand Mound (Exit 88) and the U.S. Highway 12 and Old Highway 99 Southwest on-ramp to northbound I-5 will be closed from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 4.
• The right lane of northbound I-5 approaching 93rd Avenue Southwest in Tumwater will be closed from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 5.
Travelers will detour via Harrison Avenue at Exit 82 or Maytown at Exit 95, according to WSDOT.
“This work is occurring during daytime hours when driver behavior is generally safer, and crews and work zone signs are more easily seen,” WSDOT said in a news release. “With increases in work zone crashes and risky driving, WSDOT is taking several steps to better ensure everyone’s safety in work zones.”
When approaching a work zone, WSDOT asks drivers to remember to:
• Slow down — drive the posted speeds, they are there for your safety.
• Be kind — our workers are out there helping to keep you safe and improve the roadways.
• Pay attention — both to workers directing you and surrounding traffic; put your phone down when behind the wheel.
• Stay calm — expect delays, leave early; no meeting or appointment is worth risking someone’s life.
Travelers are strongly encouraged to use WSDOT’s travel tools before traveling through the area.
