After nearly four years as chief of Lewis County Fire District 5 (LCFD5) in Napavine, Dan Mahoney was terminated from his position in June, the fire district’s board of commissioners confirmed Friday.

“On June 9, 2023, LCFD5 Board Of Fire Commissioners made the decision to move in a new direction in respect to the leadership of LCFD5 and terminated Dan Mahoney’s contract without cause,” the LCFD5 Board of Fire Commissioners said in a prepared statement on Friday, Aug. 25.

The board released the statement in response to an inquiry by a Chronicle reporter.

Mahoney confirmed his contract was formally terminated on June 11.

“My contract was terminated without cause for whatever reasons the commissioners felt they wanted to,” Mahoney said in response to a Chronicle inquiry earlier this week.

Mahoney became chief of LCFD5 on Aug. 1, 2019, after over three decades as a firefighter, according to previous Chronicle reporting.

Mahoney still resides in Lewis County and remains involved in the community, he said.

Gregg Peterson, who retired as chief of LCFD5 in 2016, is currently serving as interim chief.

“The board is working to seek a qualified chief to best serve the community, our firefighters, staff and programs. As always, the top priority is the determination to ensure public safety and to continue to provide the highest level of fire service possible to our community,” the LCFD5 Board of Fire Commissioners stated.
