First frost of the year settles in Western Washington

Overcast skies, sweater weather, fall leaves, pumpkin patches … we are certainly in the throes of autumn.

Here’s one more mile marker we’ve passed into spooky season: Western Washington’s first frost of the year.

The National Weather Service issued a frost advisory for the interior lowlands, including Olympia and Chehalis, and the foothills, from Lewis County all the way up to the Canadian border. The advisory lasted from 2 to 8 a.m. Tuesday.

People living inland on the west side of the state may awake to a crisp coat of silver over their porches and vegetation. Temperatures dropped to the low 30s, NWS meteorologist Samantha Borth said.

A second dusting of frost may come Wednesday morning, when temperatures are expected to return to the low 30s, she said.

Don’t expect frost if you’re living in Seattle, however. Being near the water mitigates frost, Borth said.

Seattle, as usual, can expect something a little more wet instead. A weather system will bring a chance for light showers Thursday and Friday, Borth said, before a stronger system over the weekend could bring chances of more widespread rain.
