Five hurt when boat on Oregon river catches fire and sinks

Five people were injured Sunday when a boat they were aboard on the Willamette River caught fire and ultimately sank, officials said.

The incident took place around 3 p.m. near Kerr Public Dock in downtown, a release from the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said. A caller said a boat in the middle of the river was burning and that people aboard were leaping from it.

Passing boats helped pull the five people from the water as their craft sank. All were injured, the release said, but the injuries appeared to be minor. Once on land, they went to a local hospital.

The names of the people involved and the name of their boat were not immediately available. As of Sunday evening, the sheriff’s River Patrol Unit and fire investigators were on the scene.
