The state secretary of health has granted a former nursing assistant accused of striking a patient in the face while he was employed as a psychiatric security assistant at Western State Hospital in 2022 with a conditional agency affiliated counselor license.

In January 2024, the Washington state Nursing Assistant Program charged then-registered nursing assistant Mauricio Matias Retambay with unprofessional conduct for using his knee to strike a patient in the face, causing the patient to lose a tooth, on April 22, 2022, according to case records.

Retambay accepted a stipulation to informal discipline on May 10, 2024, in which he agreed to pay a $250 fine to the program and complete eight hours of continuing education in patient rights and use of force within the next six months.

Retambay first received his nursing assistant registration on May 10, 2018, and the credential expired on July 16, 2024, according to state Department of Health records.

The state secretary of health granted Retambay an agency affiliated counselor license on Feb. 15, with set conditions requiring him to maintain compliance with the stipulation he signed in May 2024, according to case documents.

Retambay is practicing in Thurston County, according to the state Department of Health.
