Free community recycling event scheduled for Sept. 28 between Napavine and Winlock

Lewis County residents are invited to recycle and dispose of electronics, appliances, scrap metal, household chemicals, yard waste and more during a Community Recycle Event at Lewis County Public Works’ location between Napavine and Winlock on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Computer and television recycling, appliance and scrap metal recycling, yard waste drop off,  and household hazardous waste collection will be offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the event,  which is sponsored by the Lewis County Department of Public Works Solid Waste Utility.  Sensitive document shredding will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event takes place at the Lewis County Public Department Area 3 Road Shop, located at 111 Pleasant Valley Road off of state Highway 603.

Participants should be prepared to provide proof of residency, as the event is limited to Lewis  County residential customers only, according to a news release.

The event is offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Certain recycling opportunities may  end early, if containers fill up. No garbage or other materials will be accepted.

A Department of Ecology grant is providing partial funding to pay for the community recycling  events, according to the news release.  For more information, call 360-740-1451 or email swu@lewiscountywa.gov.



Here are the details for each part of the community recycling program:

• E-Cycle collection: All flatscreen televisions, other TVs that are 42 inches or smaller, computer monitors and CPUs can be recycled. Each household is limited to two items.

• Household hazardous waste collection: Drop off unwanted household paints, pesticides and other chemicals for free so they can be recycled or disposed of properly. Each household is limited to 10 CFL lights, 5 gallons of motor oil, 5 gallons of antifreeze and 5 gallons of cooking oil. No containers larger than 5 gallons will be accepted, nor will any PaintCare items. Information on those items can be found at paintcare.org.

• Appliance and scrap metal recycling: Households may drop off any item that is more than 75 percent metal, but people are asked to drain fluids from motors before recycling. Appliances, such as refrigerators, freezers, stoves, washers, dryers, hot water heaters and dishwashers, are accepted, but there is a limit of two large appliances per household.

• Yard waste drop-off: Residents may bring grass clippings, leaves and branches, but are asked to unload into the container on site. No plastic bags will be accepted. Residents are asked to dump the contents of yard waste bags into a container and  dispose of the bags in their curbside garbage container. No noxious weeds will be accepted .

• Sensitive document shredding: Residents may bring in up to three grocery bags of sensitive documents they would like to have shredded for free. The shredded paper will be taken to a paper recycling facility to be made into new paper.
