Friday's Prep Boys Basketball: Indians Take Down Mules

Posted

TOLEDO — The Indians were outshot by the Mules here on Friday night, but Toledo still came away with a 53-32 win in Central 2B League basketball action.

Toledo’s Carmen Robles led all scorers with 15 points. Joe Wallace added 13 points and Junior Arroyo scored eight points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Indians. Robles has been the leading scorer in all three games this season for the Indians.

“This summer, he was real consistent. I think Joe and Reece and Junior draw the best defenders, they are more well known,” Toledo coach Grady Fallon said. “I think he’s sneaking through the cracks, maybe they aren’t prepared as much for him. He’s not doing anything fancy.”

Toledo’s defense was the story of the game, as the Indians scored 17 points off 13 turnovers, while the Mules scored 0 points off of 14 Toledo turnovers.

“We’re usually more in tune with the offense, it sets the tempo of your game,” Fallon said. “I get used to us playing hard on defense and that was the difference tonight. When things aren’t going well, that saved our bacon tonight. It wasn’t anything special, just playing hard and attacking after that.”

Each team had trouble scoring early on, with the Indians leading 13-10 after the first quarter. Toledo locked down defensively in the second quarter, allowing six points en route to a 25-16 lead at halftime.

The Indian defense was even better in the second half, allowing 16 total points and cruising to the 21-point victory.

Toledo (3-0, 2-0) travels to face Winlock on Tuesday in a C2BL matchup.

Kalama Sprints Past Winlock

KALAMA — Kalama held Winlock to five points in the second quarter, allowing the Chinooks to cruise to a 78-53 in Central 2B League action here on Friday.

Kalama’s Blake Stemkoski led all scorers with 20 points. Alex Dyer added 14 points, Cameron Walker chipped in 12 points and Daniel Gerega scored 10 points for the Chinooks. Dawson Hall led Winlock with 21 points and Wyatt Dean added 12 points for the Cardinals.

Winlock played tough in the first quarter, trailing17-15 after one quarter, but Kalama scored 20 points in the second quarter to build a 37-20 lead at halftime. Kalama added 16 points in the third quarter and 25 points in the fourth quarter to cruise to victory.

“We just had a major letdown in the second quarter as far as competitiveness. We were ready to go to begin with, but as soon as we sat down for the quarter break, they hit some shots and we couldn’t recover until the locker room at halftime,” Winlock coach Nick Bamer said. “It’s tough to go on the road in this league. We got outrebounded tonight, that’s not something we can do and find victories.”

Winlock (2-2, 1-1) faces Sydney Grammar School, a traveling Australian team, today at 4 p.m. in Winlock.

Oakville Falls to Mount Rainier Lutheran

OAKVILLE — Oakville fought to come from behind in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t meant to be, as Mount Rainier Lutheran edged Oakville 65-60 in nonleague basketball action here on Friday.

Oakville’s Devin Boyd scored 29 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked eight shots, and Nathan Boyd added a career high 15 points for the Acorns.

The Hawks took an 18-11 advantage after one quarter, and went into halftime up 34-27. Oakville managed just eight points in the third quarter, but scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to make a run, but the Hawks were able to hold on for the win.

“Our boys battled hard all night, never quit,” Oakville coach Mark Johnson said. “Devin and fellow senior playmaker Alex Youckton provided excellent leadership. We had trouble executing our offense so I have to give the Hawks credit for playing intense defense on us.”

Oakville (1-1) hosts Mary M. Knight on Tuesday.
