The German shepherd dog found tied to a large rock on a Woodburn street last week has been reunited with its family, police announced Monday.
After originally believing the dog had been abandoned, Woodburn police discovered during the investigation that the dog had escaped from its home during a storm while tethered to a concrete block.
Woodburn police found the dog on May13 in the 600 block of Willow Avenue, just west of the Woodburn Premium Outlets. Officers were able to safely free the dog and gave it food and water, officials said.
The dog was brought to the Marion County Animal Shelter last week and has since been returned to its home, according to an update from Woodburn police. Officers inspected the dog’s living conditions and confirmed the dog had adequate food, water and care.
The dog’s owner was cited for unlawful tethering, which states that a dog cannot be tethered for more than 10 hours in a 24-hour period. Woodburn police said community service officers will make follow-up visits to make sure the dog remains safe and the owner complies following their citation.
