Girl Suffers Minor Injury After Fireworks Trigger Brush Fire in Thurston County

A girl suffered a minor injury in Tumwater Sunday evening after she tried to put out a small fire triggered by fireworks, City of Tumwater spokesperson Ann Cook said.

The girl had a minor burn that was treated at the scene, Cook said.

About 7:40 p.m., Tumwater fire crews were dispatched to Viola Street Southeast and 91st Street Southeast, which is west of Old Highway 99 and south of Olympia Regional Airport. A check of a map shows that area is within Tumwater city limits.

Children in the area reported the fire and then tried to put it out, including the girl. Police are not looking for a suspect, Cook said.

Fireworks are banned in Tumwater, Olympia and Lacey and can be banned in unincorporated Thurston County if the Board of County Commissioners feels that weather conditions warrant a ban.

There is no ban this year, county spokeswoman Meghan Porter said; however, the use of fireworks in the county is limited to certain times: 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday, July 3, and 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., July 4, she said. It is supposed to be hot and dry on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The Independence Day forecast calls for a high of 89 degrees, followed by temperatures in the upper 80s until Friday when it is expected to be slightly cooler at 78 degrees, National Weather Service data show.
