Jimothy fandom has reached new heights, and now you can see in terms of dollars how high the scrappy short-spined Seattle raccoon has climbed in the public zeitgeist.
A one-of-one golden Mariners card featuring the adored fuzz ball sold Sunday night for $20,100 on eBay.
Abby, a soon-to-be eighth grader, pulled the unique golden card from its sleeve after receiving one of the 20,000 Jimothy-themed baseball cards given to the fans entering T-Mobile Park during a Jimothy-themed baseball game on Aug. 5 against the Detroit Tigers.
People asked to buy the card from the eight-grader throughout the game, but the family decided to hold on to the card, mother Jessie Nino told The Seattle Times.
Realizing the card was worth a lot, she thought that “if we can leverage this for Abby’s college or Abby’s future home purchase, we’re going to be smart about it.”
And betting on Jimothy fandom in Seattle, and even beyond, seems like a safe choice.
The golden Jimothy baseball card had garnered 100 bids by the time it sold around 6 p.m. Sunday. Dozens of other Jimothy baseball cards are going for tens to hundreds of dollars on eBay as well.
Abby’s sale now makes the golden Jimothy card the highest marked stadium giveaway card, surpassing an L.A. Dodgers’ “One Piece” offering from last season that sold for $19,800 in February, The Athletic noted.
You can buy a modest new car for $20,000. You can start up your own mobile coffee cart business. You can buy about 6,700 grande cups of brewed coffee from Starbucks. Or, of course, start a college fund.
