Ground game leads way in Titan victory

The Pe Ell-Willapa Valley football improved to 3-0 with a 46-12 at Wahkiakum on Friday night.

Spud Swogger got the Titans on the board in the first quarter, and the Titans started to pile on in the second. Blake Howard found the end zone twice, and Cody Strozyk added a touchdown run of his own to break the game open.

It was more of the same in the third, as the Titans scored three more to open up a 46-0 lead. The highlight of the day came on the second touchdown of the third, when the Titans perfectly executed a hook-and-ladder play with Blaine King and Strozyk, who combined for 49 yards on the play.

Wahkiakum was able to keep on the board in the second half, but it was much too little and too late. While the two touchdowns came through the air, the Titans defense had their share of success defending the pass throughout the game, intercepting the Wahkiakum quarterback three times.

“Our defense played outstanding,” PWV coach Nate Smith said. “We held some fast receivers in check.”

Neither Howard nor Strozyk hit 100 yards on the ground, but they both came close. Strozyk finished with 99 yards, Howard with 97, and Swogger also added 55 yards. As a team, the Titans ran for 303 yards.

PWV’s biggest test to date will come next Friday, when they will head to Napavine to face the Tigers.
