‘Heart of the Boistfort Valley’: Baw Faw Grange to Hold Community ‘Rummage for the Roof’ Sale on Saturday

This Saturday, shoppers can continue to fill their attics and storage units — but this time, in good conscience.

At the community garage sale at the Baw Faw Grange on Saturday, Oct. 15, proceeds will go toward fixing the roof of the building, which is both an iconic Curtis structure and a community hub for everything from flood responses to dances.

The “Rummage for the Roof” sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 995 Boistfort Road, Curtis.

“Our motto is ‘The Heart of Boistfort Valley,’” said grange member Hollie Kunishige, who is organizing the event. “It’s the community hub. It’s where the organizations come to meet, where we have community events and where the community knows they can come for help in the case of emergencies. And so in all those ways it’s a really significant part of — or kind of our only — infrastructure in this rural community.”

The roof needs a replacement of the asphalt shingles, Kunishige said, which are reaching the end of their utility. The cost estimate for the project is over $20,000, so this will likely be the first of several fundraisers for the roof.

The sale will feature sellers of kids toys, household items and much more, whose overhead fees will benefit the grange hall. Kunishige said these kinds of events are beneficial for locals, who are usually reluctant to hold garage sales as they are far out in rural neighborhoods. There will also be donated items, the sales of which will go straight to the grange. Kunishige said people can sign up as sellers for $15 by calling 360-219-7944 or emailing bawfawgrange34@gmail.com up through Friday.

Drop-off donations can be delivered to the hall throughout the day on Thursday.
