A waxing gibbous moon rises from the eastern horizon above Mount St. Helens on Wednesday, May 27, as seen from Koontz Road near Napavine. The full moon appeared in the skies starting early Sunday morning, May 31, as a rare blue moon, as it was the second full moon of the month. The moon is at its apogee, the furthest point from the earth in its orbit, meaning the blue moon was also a "micromoon," appearing slightly smaller and less bright in the night sky.
