In Focus: Sparks Fly as Repairs to Engine 15 Continue in Chehalis
Steam Locomotive Restoration Specialist Jason Sobczynski, with Next Generation Rail Solutions, ignites an oxyacetylene torch while preparing to heat up rivets to be placed in staybolt holes around the Chehalis-Centralia Railroad and Museum (CCRM) Engine 15 firebox Saturday in Chehalis. The steam engine has been out of commission for two years following an in-depth inspection five years ago that showed there was deferred and much-needed maintenance required on its structural integrity. Last April, it was estimated that repairs would take six to 12 months. Repairs to the train’s boiler were originally expected to cost about $150,000, according to previous reports in The Chronicle. CCRM was able to secure state funding.
