In Loving Memory of Goldie Steele: 1937-2022

Goldie Louise (Stewart) Steele, a longtime resident of Chehalis, passed away at the age of 84 on Monday, July 4, 2022, in Mesa, Arizona. 

Goldie was born Nov. 24, 1937, in Chehalis to Rod and Elma (Larmon) Stewart. She attended grade school at Jackson Prairie, where she met her lifelong friends, Mary Roberts Rakoz, Roberta Dooley Roth, Ellen Hamric Calkins and Vie Jenks Hamilton, later graduating from W.F. West High School, in 1955. Goldie and her parents owned and operated Rod’s Café located at Mary’s Corner. She later moved to Chehalis where she was employed by Wayne’s Photo Finishing, V.R. Lee Insurance, Lewis County Medical and Peterson’s Distributing. 

Goldie and her husband, Don, decided to leave their jobs in Chehalis and set out to see America.That adventure lasted more than 10 years, when they finally decided to settle down back in Chehalis. Over the past four years, Don and Goldie enjoyed their retirement in Mesa, Arizona. Goldie then spent her time tending to her flowers and baking for her grandchildren. 

Goldie is survived by her husband of 50 years, Donald “Baldy” Steele, of Mesa, Arizona; three sons John (Betty) Loy, of Chehalis, David (Donna) Loy, of Castle Pines, Colorado, and Wayne (Cherise) Loy, of Marcos Island, Florida; four stepchildren, Donald (Cindy) Steele, of Silver Creek, Debbie (Rick) Hamilton, of Chehalis, Ladonna (Kim) Dodge, of Bakersfield, California, and Nancy (Merlin) Prime, of Onalaska; and two brothers, Rod (Janice) Stewart, of Holland, Michigan, and Marlow (Carol) Stewart, of Napavine; as well as 14 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. 

There will be a celebration of life Saturday, Sept. 10, 2022, 2 p.m., at 577 SW 19th St., Chehalis, Washington.
