Martin “Lyle” Spears, 89, passed away on Sept. 24, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was born on Oct. 30, 1934, in Kosmos, Washington, near Randle. He is the oldest son of Raymond and Opal Spears, and brother to John Spears (Patricia), Mary Ann Wison (Larry, deceased) and Patricia Lou Spears.
Lyle grew up in Chehalis, Washington, and graduated from the inaugural class at W.F. West High School in Chehalis. With a suitcase in hand, he headed south to attend Northwest Christian College and the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon, where he graduated with a degree in architecture.
He met his bride in Eugene, Oregon, where his reputation of winking at all girls caught the eye of Phyllis Bates. After graduation, they moved to Vancouver, Washington, where they raised a family and became active community members for over 69 years.
Much of Lyle’s career was spent with Nelson, Walla and Dolle of Vancouver, Washington. He retired in the early 2000s. He was proud of the many buildings he created, and his experience with Spec Writing made him a resource for the younger architects.
Lyle was a transportation and logging enthusiast. He trekked across the Pacific Northwest to gather historical artifacts from SP&S, Weyerhaeuser Logging Company and much more. He spent much of his life creating model railroads, some of which were featured at the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma. He was published in numerous railroad publications and was an active member of the model railroad community.
He was a devoted member and Elder of MacArthur Boulevard Christian Church and served his church community throughout his life. He is survived by his sweetheart of 69 years, Phyllis Jean (Bates); sons Gordon, (Betty), Jeffrey and Mark (Megan); and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
There will be a private family remembrance.
