Input Sought on Proposal to Name  Riffe Lake Overlook in Honor of Gary Stamper

The Lewis County commissioners would like to honor their former colleague Gary Stamper by renaming the Riffe Lake Overlook — located along Highway 12 just east of the Mossyrock Dam — in his honor.

The county is asking the Washington State Transportation Commission to consider naming the highway overlook after the late commissioner, coach and educator, and they would like to hear from residents.

“Stamper was instrumental in working with property owners to harvest trees from the lake side of the highway that were obstructing the viewpoint,” the county said in a news release. “Thanks to Stamper, all who pass by today have an unobstructed view of Riffe Lake, the beautiful Lewis County countryside and Cascade mountain range in the distance.”

Prior to his death due to COVID-19 Sept. 29, 2021, Stamper prided himself on being an approachable champion for the residents of Lewis County, especially regarding timber and transportation, according to the county.

Lewis County Manager Erik Martin invites comments on the renaming of the Riffe Lake Overlook in Stamper’s honor. Comments can be sent to bocc@lewiscountywa.gov by Friday, Jan. 27.
