Interstate 5 Driver in Oregon Throws Money Out Window to ‘Bless’ People With Cash

Oregon’s wet April rained more than water Tuesday night, when 38-year-old Colin Davis McCarthy threw handfuls of $100 bills outside his car window on Interstate 5 in Eugene, according to Oregon State Police.

Troopers located his car and warned him against littering and creating potential hazards for other drivers. McCarthy, who is from Eugene, agreed to stop throwing cash, but not before he had already tossed out thousands of dollars, according to an estimate by law enforcement.

Drivers stopped to gather bills, slowing traffic, so police searched the area for the remainder of the money to “prevent further hazards,” but they did not find any.

“OSP is urging the public not (to) go searching for money on the highway – which is very dangerous and contributes to a hazardous condition,” state police spokesperson Capt. Kyle Kennedy wrote in an email.

McCarthy told police he was doing well financially and wanted to “bless others” with money, Kennedy said.

Police said he got his money elsewhere but declined to say from whom. McCarthy couldn’t be reached for comment.

“My understanding is the money was taken from accounts the individual had access to,” Kennedy said in an email.

At this time, McCarthy faces no charges, according to Kennedy.
