Jack State Foundation to partner with Chehalis Parks to host CPR certification class

The Jack State Foundation is partnering with Chehalis Parks and Recreation to host a CPR certification class from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 25.

It will be located at the Fred Hess Kitchen, 235 SW 13th St. in Chehalis.

The cost to attend is $50.

Space in the class is limited to 12, but there will be more seasonal offerings.

The Jack State Foundation was founded in January 2024 by Kristin State Hutchinson and Kyle State, when their dad, legendary W.F. West High School tennis coach Jack State, died at the age of 80.

State was a coach and physical education teacher in the Lewis County community for roughly 50 years.

During that time, he led several W.F. West boys and girls tennis, high school basketball, Chehalis Middle School basketball and Centralia College men’s basketball teams to success.

“Jack State was passionate about the power of sports in the lives of kids and spent much of his life, whether teaching or coaching, developing opportunities to play. With this in mind, and in his honor, the Jack State Foundation was created,” Kristin State Hutchinson stated in an email to The Chronicle. “Jack believed in the transformative power of sports fostering teamwork, discipline and personal growth, and the (Jack State Foundation) is committed to breaking down financial barriers so that all student athletes can pursue their passions and reach their full potential both on and off the field, court or track.”

The reason for holding a CPR class in Jack State’s memory is personal.

“We have chosen to partner on these CPR certification classes because when my dad passed, I was sitting next to him on the couch,” Kristin State Hutchinson said. “I hadn’t been certified for years and wasn’t confident in what to do. I did my best, but it wasn’t enough, and I will never forgive myself for not being able to help him. Had I been certified more recently, who knows what life for my family might look like now? I would give literally anything to have more time with my dad, and I’m hoping this class will help anyone who might find themselves in a similar situation with a loved one, or give someone the confidence to step in and help in an emergency.”

The Jack State Foundation is also planning other fundraisers throughout the year, such as hosting more CPR training classes, a spring spaghetti feed and a 6.8K walk/run this summer, a distance selected in honor of Jack State, who stood at 6-foot-8.

A percentage of the funds raised during Tennis Month in Chehalis go to the Jack State Foundation. All money raised goes to mini-grants covering costs for student athletes.

The foundation would like to hear from any kids or families who could use a hand by emailing kristin68.jsf@gmail.com

“The Jack State Foundation is dedicated to empowering student athletes, ensuring access to sports is never hindered by finances, and granting young people the opportunity to play,” says Kristin State Hutchinson said.
