Los Angeles vocalist Holly Pyle will appear with the Dmitri Matheny Group from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Juice Box Public House on Friday, July 31.
The first show in their summer tour, the Centralia appearance features Portlanders Joe Bagg on keyboard and Eric Gruber on bass, together with Seattle’s Mark Ivester on drums and Matheny on flugelhorn.
“Dmitri and I have driven hundreds of thousands of miles together to play music all over the country,” Pyle said in a news release from the group. “I’ve loved my many visits to Centralia, but haven’t had the privilege to sing here until this year. The Juice Box is such a fun spot and the band is always killin. What a perfect place to start this tour!”
Pyle and the band will put their spin on familiar radio hits including “Norwegian Wood” by the Beatles, Gerry Rafferty’s “Right Down The Line,” Burt Bacharach’s “Close To You,” Paul Simon’s “Fifty Ways To Leave Your Lover,” and more.
Pyle started out as an opera major before studying jazz and psychology, according to the release. Pyle now performs with leading jazz groups and appears regularly as a solo a-cappella act using electronic looping.
American flugelhornist Matheny, based in Centralia since 2014, is an honors graduate of Berklee College of Music. Matheny joined the jazz scene in the 1990s as the protégé of jazz legend Art Farmer, and has since released 12 CDs and toured extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.
For a decade, Matheny and Pyle have toured the Western states. Popular programs include The SnowCat, an original theatrical production for kids and families, Jazz From The Silver Screen, The Brazil Project, and dives into the songbooks of Henry Mancini, Burt Bacharach, Joni Mitchell and Stevie Wonder.
