July presents a jam-packed month of community festivals but nowhere is it more evident than in the South Lewis County community of Toledo. The small town that serves as one of the gateways to Mount St. Helens begins July with its annual Cheese Days celebration and ends with a steelhead fishing derby that's not to be missed.

Toledo Cheese Days

Toledo

Cheese Days’ roots stretch back to the founding of the Cowlitz Valley Cheese Association in 1919. After the first paycheck distribution, everyone gathered for cheese sandwiches and coffee and so much fun was had, they decided to make it an annual tradition. The cheese factory closed in 1945 but Cheese Days has stayed popular in the hearts of Toledo locals and has become a three-day event packed with things to do. Mike Morgan, who owns Morgan Arts Centre and Gallery 505 with his wife, Di, a member of the Cheese Days committee, said his “must see” recommendations would vary from family to family. If you have small children, the frog jump is sure to be a hit, he said. If you’re an athlete, the tennis or golf tournaments or Cheddar Challenge run might be more your style. Or if you’re an epicure, don’t miss the wine and cheese tasting, featuring locally made wines, cheeses, chocolates, beer and spirits.

“But I’d say number one is the parade and the car show,” Morgan said.

Fourth Annual Steelhead Derby

July 26

Along the Cowlitz River in Toledo

This one-day fishing derby started four years ago and last year drew in about 60 anglers hoping to snag the big one, as well as a host of prizes. First prize is $300, second prize is $200 and third prize is $100 and there will be a $50 mystery weight fish prize.

Fishing begins at 5 a.m. Participants can fish along the Cowlitz anywhere from Barrier Dam to to Gearhart Gardens in Longview. Weigh in is no later than 4 p.m. at the Toledo Boat Launch.

Cost to participate is $25 per person for adults and kids can participate for free. If you are fishing in a group, either in a boat or on shore, everyone in your party needs to be registered for the derby or you will be disqualified. At the end of derby, there is a free barbecue for participants. Cowlitz Tribe donated 20 steelhead for barbecue. The public can attend the dinner for a suggested donation of $5.

Organizer Rick Lovell, who started the derby with his wife, Tonya, said between the dinner and door prizes, the entry fee is very reasonable. And the money raised goes to a good cause: 25 percent of funds go to Friends of Cowlitz and 25 percent to Vision Toledo.

“People love to steelhead fish and this is a way for them to have a little competition and just be on the river and it’s a good time,” Lovell said.
