Junior Legion Baseball: Tenino Wins Twice in Chehalis

Posted

Tenino did most of its damage early here Tuesday afternoon, taking a 6-0 lead after three innings and holding on for a 9-1 win over Chehalis Sobe-Toyota in Area 2 South League baseball action.

The first game of the Junior Legion twinbill in Chehalis counted toward the league standings, while the nightcap — a 12-3, five-inning Trapper victory — was sport for sport's sake.

Zeb Chamberlain tossed the first three innings for Tenino and hit a solo home run in the third inning. Kolton McKitrick took over in the fourth frame and closed out the win, with the pitching duo allowing a total of three Chehalis hits.

"Zeb threw really well," Tenino coach Jacob Conklin said. "The only reason we actually pulled him, is they had football during the day, so he was worn out."

Kellen Miller went 3 for 3 and scored twice for Tenino, and Taylor Sheldon added a pair of hits. Brandon Davis, Michael Rose and Andrew Michal accounted for Chehalis' trio of hits.

"Our pitching did well," Chehalis coach Cody Ray said. "They worked through a lot of situations, and I think our defense just didn't come through. That was probably the main problem."

J.C. Cleary and David Ayres handed the mound duties for the hosts.

Tenino trailed 3-2 after three innings in the late game, before Kaleb Strawn took over on the mound and shut out Chehalis the rest of the way — with his team spotting him 5 runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.

Strawn helped his own cause with a double and a single, while Thomas Pier knocked a double and hit a bases-clearing triple in the fifth inning. Greigh Hill added a pair of hits for the winners.

Cleary and Ryan Steepy each had two hits for Chehalis.

Tenino (4-4 league) will host Elma in a 5 p.m. twinbill on Monday, host Rainier on Wednesday for two games and host Montesano on Thursday.

Chehalis (1-8 league) will host Montesano on Tuesday.
