A Kelso man shot by police Aug. 1 has been arrested in connection with the shooting, investigators said Tuesday.

Two Kelso Police officers shot Daniel Madden after he allegedly pointed a pistol at them and ignored commands to drop his gun, the Lower Columbia Major Crimes Team concluded in an investigation of the shooting.

The incident began after police arrived at the scene of a reported hit-and-run and a witness told them that Madden, 19, was the driver and that he was armed and had been drinking. After police got to Madden’s house in Kelso, Madden stepped outside while hiding a pistol behind his back, according to surveillance footage the investigative team reviewed.

Officers told Madden to show his hands but he ignored them, then revealed his pistol and pointed it at the officers while walking toward them. He eventually got to within a few feet of the officers and pointed his gun directly at one of them, the Lower Columbia Major Crimes Team said. Sgt. Aaron Marthhaller and Officer Jeff Brown fired their guns, hitting Madden in the arm, chest and head.

Madden survived the shooting and was released from PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center, police said. After his Friday arrest, he likely faces two first-degree assault charges and one charge of obstructing a law enforcement officer.
