Koontz Road Bridge repair set to begin next week; to disrupt I-5 traffic

Starting Monday, the Koontz Road bridge over Interstate 5 will be closed to traffic while state crews repair the long-damaged bridge.

Damaged by an oversized vehicle in November 2021, the Washington State Department of Transportation will begin a nearly $1 million repair.

The work will be completed by the end of the year. The repairs will close portions of I-5 at times.

A single lane of I-5 north will close overnight from 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29, to 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30, while crews demolish a portion of the bridge at milepost 69.35 near the bridge.

All northbound lanes of I-5 will be closed from 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct.6, to 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7, between state Route 508 and U.S. Highway 12 near Napavine to set bridge girders.

Crews will set up a detour on state Route 508, Jackson Highway and U.S. Highway 12, and back onto I-5 during the I-5 closure.

“As with any highway maintenance and construction project, travelers must exercise caution through the work zone,” WSDOT said in the release. “To keep both road users and road workers safe, travelers are asked to have patience and obey advanced warning signs.”
