Letter to the Editor: It’s Time for a New Approach in Sheriff’s Office, Former Chief Deputy Says

Posted

I worked for the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office for 21 years.

I worked for Sheriff John McCroskey, Sheriff Steve Mansfield and left as a chief deputy 18 months after Rob Snaza became sheriff.

I love Lewis County, the community members and the professionals who work at the sheriff’s office. I felt appreciated, valued and productive under McCroskey and Mansfield. They both lead with a mission that energized and propelled us forward, even in the most difficult times.

They had goals and objectives to keep us on course in meeting that mission and encouraged promoting a true connection with our community in everything we did.

I had planned on retiring from the sheriff's office.

Prior to Snaza taking office, we had a robust social media program. We had programs such as a Day in the Life where we invited the public into our office for the day to see what we do, ask questions and provide input. We had an active Explorer and reserve deputy program, a large volunteer group. We were involved in the county drug task force. We had an East End Substation.

Those are all gone.

During my time working as a chief deputy for Snaza, I saw him display extreme favoritism and micromanage employees to the point where they stopped making decisions and “just did as they were told.” I observed irresponsible fiscal decisions. I observed deterioration of partnerships with local law enforcement. I witnessed the erosion of important relationships with community members.

Lip service instead of action became the new way of conducting business. I watched the transparency with the public, we had worked so hard to build, deteriorate.

Yes, sheriff Snaza does a great job of promoting a self-image, but ask yourself, what has he really done for the sheriff’s office and the people of Lewis County in building strong partnerships and delivering that feeling of safety and security? Even more important, what does he intend to do if reelected? Have you heard him mention his vision, goals, objectives and plans for the next four years?

As sheriff, he has the opportunity to make true and lasting change, but is he capable or willing to put in the work to do so? Does he even understand the sheriff leadership role and responsibility to the people and community?

I have known Tracy Murphy for over 20 years. He is a man of integrity. He has a moral compass. He believes in doing the right thing. He has a mission, attainable goals and is committed to working hard for the people of Lewis County. He has a vision which encompasses making improvements and promoting public safety within your sheriff’s office.

You can go to his website at www.tracymurphyforsheriff.com to learn about his plans. He is willing to meet with anyone and answer your questions.

It is time for a change. It is time to bring in new ideas, fresh concepts and try a new approach.

Lewis County deserves the very best. Vote Tracy Murphy for Lewis County Sheriff.
