Letter to the Editor: Limit One Constitutional Amendment and the Rest Are Fair Game

Posted

Letter writer Katherine Ford has missed the point of my letter concerning gun ownership.

Her suggestion to tighten gun laws is ludicrous. We already have all of the laws she suggests. Background checks, gun free zones, waiting periods and storage laws are already in place. They have been for years.

And yet Uvalde, mall shootings, school shootings, etc., happen all the time.

My point was two-fold. First, there are so many guns in circulation today that it is absurd to suggest that we outlaw them. And second, limiting gun ownership only hurts the law-abiding citizen.

Do you suppose the Uvalde shooter cared about gun laws? Did he limit himself to 10 ammunition magazines? Do you suppose criminals care about background checks and gun safety laws? Of course not. Only law-abiding citizens follow those laws.

The people that wish to do you harm don’t care in the slightest, and will find a way to get a weapon. And you miss the point of the founding fathers in allowing citizens to maintain their weapons. They were in fear of a government out of control, like many of those in Europe and England. How do you protect yourself from the government without weapons? The government has them.

“Stricter gun laws” is the battle cry of the left. How about limiting the rights of news outlets? After all, the majority of Americans get their political news from ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN and the rest of the news alphabet.

A few months ago, CNN admitted that they produced numerous stories about President Trump to hinder his re-election. And that is where the average person gets their political information.

Winston Churchill said it best: “The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.”

So let’s limit the First Amendment. If you want to limit the Second Amendment, why stop there?

Let’s limit search and seizure restrictions. That’s the Fourth Amendment. And jury trials are expensive, so let’s get rid of them. That’s the Sixth Amendment. Where do we stop? Limit one and they all are fair game.
