Before casting your vote for sheriff, do your own research. There are many spreading false information on social media, so read the public records for yourself and contact the candidates personally.
Don’t be afraid to ask uncomfortable questions.
My research into candidate Tracy Murphy began about four years ago when I started attending the Lewis County Republican Party meetings. At the time, I supported Snaza because most of those involved in local politics preferred him, and I knew little about his opponent, Tracy Murphy. I was told Murphy was a Democrat running as a Republican. When he attempted to address the party, he was shouted down, reinforcing the rumors I had heard.
Looking back, I realize none of those claims were true. I should have done my own research before voting.
The Murphys gained my respect when they began attending the meetings again despite the lies that were told and the horrible treatment they had received. They came with no hate in their hearts, but with grace and dignity. They came because they care about the conservative values of our community. That showed me a lot about their character.
When Murphy announced another run for sheriff, I offered to help. By then, conversations with more than a dozen current and former LCSO members and elected officials had revealed serious problems within the sheriff’s office, including wrongdoing and mishandled investigations. What I learned made it clear; I would not vote for Snaza again.
Murphy impressed me with his enthusiasm and vision for the sheriff’s office. He saw the problems and had detailed plans for how to solve them. He never talked down or blamed the deputies, but talked about how he wanted to ensure they received proper training and improved supervision, so mistakes could be avoided.
His sole reason for running was and is to have the best department possible to provide for the safety of Lewis County.
When the political hit job started, Murphy’s outlook never wavered. He knew he’d done nothing wrong. Anytime the conversation of his supporters became negative due to the false allegations, Murphy would remind all involved that it was in God’s hands. His incredible faith and trust in the Lord are contagious.
The smear campaign against Murphy is disgusting. The irony is that those accusing Murphy of being dishonest are the ones spreading lies. The anonymous complaint was found to be unsubstantiated, and the arbitration hearing has not yet been held. The deputies pushing these claims only highlight the problems within the sheriff’s office. Public records are available, and an honest investigation would show there’s no evidence supporting their accusations — but that wouldn’t fit their narrative.
As for Murphy’s opponent, I question his honesty and integrity after hearing four different explanations for why he decided to run, some minimizing the influence of his superiors. I want a sheriff who can’t be pressured and who made the thoughtful decision to run to make positive changes — not someone who makes a last-minute decision under the pressure of others.
