Letter to the Editor: Pearl Street Pool Demise Proves We Should Include Our Hearts When Making Decisions

Posted

This letter is in regards to Chronicle columnist Bill Moeller's most recent column focused on the Pearl Street Pool in Centralia.

Years ago, from 1957 to 1964, six days a week, I passed the North Pearl Street swimming pool to get the daily news from the Centralia Fire Department (and Chief Frank Bras).

As I returned to The Daily Chronicle news desk, the innocent, happy laughter of children frolicking in the pool reminded me summer was here.

My life's journey (currently 93 years) includes many Centralia memories: lifelong friendships (Coach Ron Brown); my first home on Borst Avenue; our first child (now 57); the harnessing of the Cowlitz River by the Tacoma City Light dams, wiping out the towns of Kosmos, Ajlune and Riffe; and the many writers seeking information for their "historic" versions of the "Centralia Massacre."

Mr. Moeller is correct about today's many changes.

Even today, the sounds of children laughing and romping by a pool reminds me of summer.

Perhaps when making decisions, we should include our hearts as well as money and brains.
