Letter to the editor: The two weevils

Posted

Once upon a time, a long, long ago, there was in Weevil Land a very rich and famous weevil. His name was Kanevil Weevil. He was a powerful weevil who had won many battles with the dreaded ants that had very large armies, but he took advantage of the weevils of Weevil Land. He taxed them to the point that they had to give half of all they made, collected or produced to Kanevil.

Although he was an evil weevil, the weevils idolized and looked up to him. In fact, they almost worshiped him. Many of them were made slaves of Kanevil Weevil’s powerful empire.

The weevils of Weevil Land were subtly lulled into the evilness of Kanevil over a period of years so that the populace thought all of this evilness was normal in Weevil Land.

They were so led astray that, well, the Master Weevil that oversees the whole world of weevils didn’t like what he saw in Weevil Land. In fact, he saw only one weevil in all of Weevil Land that wasn’t led astray by the long term subtleties of evil.

Seeno Weevil was a poor weevil that lived in a very humble weevil home. He was, however, the happiest of all weevils in the land. The reason for this was because he was honest and upright. Besides that, he was always ready and willing to help others, whether they were more fortunate or less fortunate than himself. He kept in close contact with his creator and had a clear conscience.

One day, the Master Weevil that oversaw the world of weevils decided to do something about the evil-weevil conditions of Weevil Land. He went to Weevil Land himself and pronounced to the whole population he was there to anoint a king to rule all of Weevil Land, and almost all of the weevils thought for sure that Kanevil would be the chosen one to oversee the whole of Weevil Land.

The Master Weevil anointed the poor — but honest — Seeno Weevil and told him that although being king brings with it great responsibility, he would give him all the help he ever needed. “Yes,” said Weevil World Master. “I will give you wisdom, strength, patience, perseverance and, above all, even more love in your heart for others. In serving me, you will be serving them, like a shepherd serves the needs of his sheep, and with my help you will serve your fellow weevils well.”

With that, the Master Weevil said goodbye, but as he was leaving, the rest of the weevils of Weevil Land approached the Master Weevil and inquired of him, “Why did you pick this nobody weevil? How could you do this?”

In answer to this, the Master Weevil simply said with love in his heart, and compassion in his eyes, “Though you do not yet follow my ways, I love each one of you. Therefore it was imperative that the very best I could ever do for you was to choose the Lesser of the Two Weevils.”
