Lewis and Thurston counties ease fire restrictions

Both Lewis and Thurston counties have updated fire restrictions to allow recreational fires.

The change comes as cooler and wetter weather rolls into the south Puget Sound region.

Recreational fires and charcoal and wood barbecues are now allowed in both counties. Several restrictions on campfires remain in place, including a maximum diameter of 3 feet, at least 10 feet of space around the firepit, consistent monitoring by someone 16 years of age or older and a requirement to extinguish the fire before leaving.

“Cooler temperatures and higher humidity are predicted in the region over the next several days,” said Lewis County Fire Marshal Doyle Sanford in a news release Friday. “Open burning is still not allowed and burn permits are not valid at this time.”

Thurston County’s fire safety burn ban, which applies to residential yard waste and land clearing, will remain in effect until Saturday.

The Department of Natural Resources issued a release reminding residents to remain vigilant for wildfires. As of Thursday, Washington had seen 1,855 wildfires that burned 155,503 acres this year.
