Archer Nededog, a 5-year-old boy from Lewis County, is participating in the international Ranger Rick Junior Ranger competition, hosted by the National Wildlife Federation.
He was in second place in his age group as of Tuesday and is hoping to move on to the quarterfinals. Voting for this round ends Thursday, June 26.
Prizes for winning the competition include appearing in a Ranger Rick magazine, as well as $20,000.
Archer is described by his father as an avid lover of the outdoors who enjoys exploring and learning every day. He goes on many hikes in the woods, whether it's scouting for hunting season, foraging for mushrooms or simply walking in the mountains. He enjoys fishing on the Cowlitz and Columbia rivers as well as trout fishing in local lakes.
“Archer is a fighter!” Archer’s father, Andrew Nededog, wrote in an email to The Chronicle. “When he was 8 months old, Archer began having fevers that couldn’t be explained by his pediatrician. Shortly after, he was referred to Seattle Children’s Hospital. Archer was diagnosed with Autoimmune Neutropenia at 11 months old. For the next few years, after many visits, admissions and tests at Seattle Children’s Hospital, Archer’s condition had resolved itself. He had outgrown the autoimmune disorder and no longer needed to be seen by Seattle Children’s hematology. He has been such a brave little guy and has grown into an active country boy.”
