The Lewis County Democrats worked up a sweat over the weekend at the Twin Cities Senior Center in Chehalis as a group of volunteers gathered to help with routine maintenance.
The Lewis County Democratic Central Committee spent a couple days doing volunteer work at the local senior center, cleaning the building's exterior, maintaining the grounds and landscaping and repainting the lines of the building’s parking lot, according to a news release from the party.
Lewis County Democrats Chair Zac Eckstein said it is just the start of the group's new community service initiative dubbed “Democrats Work.”
It’s also just the start of a series of planned improvement projects at senior centers around Lewis County.
"Senior centers across Lewis County provide vital services to our community members, but they have a hard time securing funding," Eckstein said. "This project is a way to help ease some of that burden with some good, old-fashioned elbow grease."
Volunteers, with help from the center's executive director, identified the maintenance that was most needed before taking action to spiff up the place. The party plans to do the same at senior centers around Lewis County. Those events will be publicized when the dates are made official, according to the news release.
Eckstein asks those interested in helping with the volunteer efforts in the future to reach out to the committee through the local party website at lewiscountydemocrats.org .
“Community service is a natural extension of our political values," Eckstein added. "We can’t just be keyboard warriors. We have to get out into the community and put our principles into action."
