Lewis County Emergency Management to Share Updated Hazard Plan in Meetings

Posted

More than 30 cities and special districts have participated in the planning process of the Lewis County Division of Emergency Management’s new hazard mitigation plan. Now, the plan is ready for public presentation and feedback.

Staff from emergency management are inviting all members of the public to join one or more of four upcoming meetings on May 3 and May 4 where staff will share an updated, multi-jurisdictional hazard mitigation plan.

The same information will be shared at each meeting and meetings will be held in Chehalis, Winlock, Packwood and Mossyrock.

Meetings on May 3 will be held at the Winlock Community Building at 607 NW Kerron St. from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and in the basement of the Lewis County Courthouse in Chehalis at 275 W. Main St. from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

On May 4, meetings will take place in the Packwood Community Hall at 12935 U.S. Highway 12 from noon to 1 p.m. and at the Mossyrock Community Center, 219 E. State St. from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

Presenters will describe various hazards that could affect the county, including floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, wildfires and storms and then provide rated risk assessments for those hazards. The plan will show how communities can be more resilient to various hazards with specific examples for each risk.

Emergency management staff will showcase a hazard mapping tool meant to provide risk assessments on more specific areas, so attending meetings nearest to one’s home could help residents better understand the risks they face at home.

Attendees and the general public are also encouraged to fill out a survey in order to help the project team develop mitigation strategies, according to a news release from emergency management.
