A large law enforcement presence is often a sign of a crime or a tragedy, but Friday morning, law enforcement officers throughout Lewis County gathered together for a joyful purpose: raising money for Lewis County Special Olympics of Washington.
Local law enforcement joined Lewis County Special Olympics athletes and supporters on a roughly 18-mile route from Napavine to Centralia on Friday, starting at the Napavine City Police Department at 8:30 a.m. and running through Chehalis and Centralia to end at Thorbeckes FitLife Center at 12:35 p.m.
Lewis County Special Olympics is a chapter of Special Olympics Washington, which aims to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
“Special Olympics Washington provides athletes continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts and skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympic athletes and the community,” Lewis County Special Olympics states on its Facebook page.
Donations to Special Olympics Washington cover all fees and expenses for the athletes, including costs associated with training and competition.
