Lewis County lifts outdoor burning restrictions effective Sept. 21

Effective 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, the Lewis County Board of Commissioners and the Lewis County fire marshal will lift the current burn restrictions on outdoor burning for all unincorporated lands regulated by the county.

County officials announced the burn restrictions change on Friday, Sept. 20.

“After careful review of the current and extended weather forecast, the Lewis County fire marshal has determined that current weather conditions within Lewis County have improved and will lift the restriction to allow outdoor burning, subject to an open burning application and permit,” Lewis County officials said in a news release.

The Lewis County fire marshal works closely with the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and local fire districts and strongly urges all county residents and property owners to be attentive to the condition of their properties through proactive fire prevention measures, such as the presence of fire-extinguishing equipment and attendance to supervise fires until they have been extinguished.

“Remember, outdoor burning is restricted to only natural vegetation from the burn site. The burning of garbage, paper or other refuse is strictly prohibited at all times,” county officials said in a news release.

Applications for open burning permits are available online at https://burnpermit.lewiscountywa.gov/ or in person at the Lewis County fire marshal’s office.

The burning of debris in city limits and urban growth areas is prohibited at all times.

County officials ask residents to refer to the DNR for restrictions applying to outdoor burning conducted on DNR-protected forestlands throughout Washington, which includes state parks. Information is available online at www.dnr.wa.gov/burn-restrictions.

The burn status will remain in effect until modified or rescinded by the board of county commissioners, according to the news release. A public announcement of any modifications will be released at that time.
