Lewis County PUD, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service’s Randle Ranger Station, has announced that the 27th annual Kids’ Fishing Derby will be held on Saturday, June 12, at the Cowlitz Falls Day Use Park, located near Randle.
The derby is being held in conjunction with National Fishing Week. The PUD will stock Lake Scanewa with over 800 trout, some as large as 8 pounds. The free event is open to youth ages 14 and younger, and will include kids’ games and several prizes. Parents are required to pre-register their children online at www.lcpud.org.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Kids’ Fishing Derby can only accommodate 50 participating children. The event will also follow Washington state COVID-19 protocols.
“After canceling last year’s derby and despite the ongoing pandemic, we are really excited to ease back into our annual fishing derby this year,” said Laura Wolfe, PUD recreation and wildlife supervisor. “We have a fun derby planned for June, and are also looking forward to holding a larger event that can accommodate more children in 2022.”
Cowlitz Falls Day Use Park is situated at the east end of Lake Scanewa where the Cispus and Cowlitz Rivers meet. The park is located approximately 2-and-a-half miles from Lewis County PUD’s Cowlitz Falls Hydroelectric Project and just a few short miles from the Leonard “Bud” Allen Park/Cowlitz Falls Campground.
