Lewis County sees slight uptick in unemployment rate

Lewis County saw an unemployment rate of 4.1% in July, slightly higher than the 3.8% rate the county reported in June. The rate is also above the 3.6% unemployment rate statewide.

Still, the 4.1% mark is the lowest rate the county has recorded in July since at least 2019.

Over the past year, Lewis County has added 170 jobs in the nonfarm sector, with growth in both the service-providing and goods-producing industries.



According to data from a Labor Area Summary for Lewis County prepared by Regional Labor Economist Jim Vleming, mining and logging jobs increased by 20 between July 2022 and July 2023, while construction jobs increased by 70 during the same period. Employment in the Trade, Transportation and Utilities industries increased by 40 jobs over the past year.

Employment in the leisure and hospitality industries decreased by 110 jobs between July 2022 and 2023. Between June and July, leisure and hospitality is down 50 jobs.
