Loggers lose back-and-forth battle in Kalama

The latest chapter in the storied rivalry between Onalaska and Kalama went the Chinooks’ way Friday in Cowlitz County, as the Loggers fell 44-36 in a result that shakes up the SWW 2B South picture a whole lot.

“They just flat-out beat us,” Onalaska coach Mazen Saade said. “That’s on me as the football coach. Our team wasn’t prepared to win that football game, and we did not.”

A back-and-forth second half saw the Loggers tie the game up at 36-36 after a 43-yard Kayden Mozingo run and a Rodrigo Rodriguez two-point conversion with 5:10 to go, but the Chinooks came back and drained nearly all of the clock before taking the lead, with Aiden Brown putting the hosts in front with just 29 ticks left.

The Loggers (4-2, 1-1 SWW 2B South) took a 6-0 lead late in the first quarter, but then saw Kalama slam the scoreboard for 22 points in the second to take a 16-point lead into the break.

That lopsided quarter ended up holding out, after a wild second half that saw Mozingo and Brown trade blows for the latter two quarters.

Mozingo finished with 333 yards on 23 carries, scoring three touchdowns in the second half — all from at least 40 yards out. Brown, meanwhile, had all 198 yards of Kalama’s rushing offense, and also threw for 221.

Rodriguez also ran for 131 yards and two touchdowns for Onalaska.

The Loggers’ defense came away with four picks, but they could only slow the Kalama spread attack down.

Onalaska will return home to take on Stevenson next Friday.
