Man Arrested After Crashing Car Into Pole in Centralia and Jumping into Skookumchuck River

A Chehalis man was arrested on multiple felony charges after he allegedly crashed his car into a pole in Centralia then jumped into the Skookumchuck River Saturday morning.

Officers with the Centralia Police Department responded to a vehicle versus pole accident in the 400 block of Downing Road where the occupants had fled the scene of the crash.

The vehicle’s occupants were quickly located near the Skookumchuck River where the driver, who was identified as 24-year-old Damien J. Madison, reportedly “fled into the river,” according to the Centralia Police Department.



Centralia police K9 Pax successfully tracked Madison along the river and Madison was taken into custody for allegedly driving under the influence, vehicular assault, hit-and-run, possession of a stolen vehicle, felon in possession of a firearm and multiple felony warrants out of several counties for violent crimes including robbery, gun-related charges and assault. A firearm was located inside the vehicle, according to the Centralia Police Department.

Madison was booked into the Lewis County Jail just before 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 20 and a judge temporarily set his bail at $100,000 over the weekend. He had a preliminary hearing scheduled in Lewis County Superior Court for 4 p.m. on Monday to revise his bail amount and set his conditions of release.
